To Give a Surprise Exam, Use Game Theory

چکیده
This paper proposes a game-theoretic solution to the surprise examination problem. It is argued that the game of " matching pennies " provides a useful model for the interaction of a teacher who wants her exam to be surprising and students who want to avoid being surprised. A distinction is drawn between prudential and evidential versions of the problem. In both, the teacher should not assign a probability of zero to giving the exam on the last day. This representation of the problem provides a diagnosis of where the backwards induction argument, which " proves " that no surprise exam is possible, is mistaken. 1. The Problem and its Game-Theoretic Setting Before the semester begins, a teacher announces to her class that she will give exactly one exam during the semester and that the exam will come as a surprise to the students when it occurs. One of the students in the class reasons as follows: If the teacher wants to give a surprise exam, she won't wait until the last day of the semester to give the exam, because the students will be expecting an exam then, if none has been given earlier. So the teacher won't give the exam on the last day. But if the last day is ruled out, the

Examination or Unexpected Hanging Paradox
Many mathematicians have a dismissive attitude towards paradoxes. This is unfortunate , because many paradoxes are rich in content, having connections with serious mathematical ideas as well as having pedagogical value in teaching elementary logical reasoning. An excellent example is the so-called " surprise examination paradox " (described below), which is an argument that seems at first to be...
متن کاملA game theory approach to the Iranian forest industry raw material market
Dynamic game theory is applied to analyze the timber market in northern Iran as a duopsony. The Nash equilibrium and the dynamic properties of the system based on marginal adjustments are determined. When timber is sold, the different mills use mixed strategies to give sealed bids. It is found that the decision probability combination of the different mills follow a special form of attractor an...
متن کاملMarket power influential approach using game theory in a two competing supply chains with multi-echelons under centralized/decentralized environments
This paper is considering the competition between two multi-echelon supply-chains on price and service under balance and imbalance of market power between the chains which are analyzing through Nash and Stackelberg game approach. The problem is categorized as the centralized or decentralized structure of each chain, which means a few different possible scenarios are developing based on the Nash...
